Understanding rally-raid: what happens between the timing points

On screen you see a machine and a cloud of dust. The decisions shaping the day are often harder to spot: an instruction interpreted correctly, a pace chosen wisely or machinery kept in reserve.

The roadbook: read before you accelerate

A roadbook is a sequence of instructions for following the route. The task is to match what is written with what is in front of you. Hesitation costs time; speed in the wrong direction does not recover it.

The special: a clock and a series of choices

The timed section measures competitive performance. But pushing harder is not always the better decision. Keeping a margin at an obstacle or preserving the vehicle may matter later in the rally.

The liaison: the day is bigger than the race

A liaison connects starts, finishes or bivouacs. It serves a different purpose from a special. When comparing days, check whether a quoted number refers to the competitive distance or the entire daily journey.

Watch a category differently

On a bike, reading and riding belong to the same person. In a car, the conversation between driver and co-driver becomes part of the spectacle. A truck’s mass demands another kind of anticipation. Classic adds a different perspective again, focused on regularity rather than speed alone.

Categories

BIKES

Riding, navigation and endurance: the rider makes every decision alone. The roadbook describes the route, while finding the right line demands constant attention.

CARS

Driver and co-driver combine their skills. One finds the pace, the other follows the roadbook, guides progress and anticipates changes in direction.

TRUCKS

Their size is impressive, but precision remains essential. Reading the terrain and looking after the machinery matter as much as power.

CLASSIC

Dakar Classic celebrates historic vehicles in a regularity event. The aim is to maintain the prescribed pace rather than simply pursue outright speed.
